Arnold Zahner was born in Rheinfelden as the only child of Hafner Arnold and Hermine Zahner-Sprenger. He came from a family of brickmakers and potters who first appeared in Rheinfelden in 1658. His grandfather founded a pottery and pottery workshop in 1869, which much later became “Rheinfelder Ceramics”. His father ran a production facility for oven tiles, tableware, etc.

Arnold Zahner spent his childhood and school years in Rheinfelden. He trained as a potter with his father and learned the craft of making a stove from his father. In Chavannes-Renens he attended the ceramic technical school and graduated in 1937; He then spent a few months at the Ceramics Technical School in Bern. From 1938 to 1941 he trained as a potter.

During the World War he did military service and took courses in drawing and modeling at the trade school in Basel. In 1942 his father died and Arnold Zahner took over the business, which manufactured tiled stoves, crockery, vases and handicrafts. At the same time he worked with Rheinfelder Keramik AG. He also created ceramic works of art for architecture. In 1946 he married Emma Häusermann. He went on many trips with her, including a study and sales trip to the United States and a first study trip to Japan in 1960, which was followed by several more.
